Target Information
Defensin alpha-1 belongs to a family of antimicrobial and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. These peptides are abundant in neutrophil granules and epithelial tissues such as the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members share a conserved cysteine motif and high sequence similarity. The Defensin alpha-1 protein, encoded by the DFA1 gene on chromosome 8, differs from Defensin alpha-3 by only one amino acid. Both genes exhibit copy number variation and have multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
