Target Information
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute-phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit contains 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 24 kDa. CRP is synthesized by the liver, and its plasma concentration increases dramatically during inflammation, infection, or tissue injury.
CRP functions as an initiator of the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and histones, and plays a critical role in innate immunity. It also acts as an opsonin and activator of monocytes/macrophages, facilitating the clearance of pathogens and necrotic cells. Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
