Target Information
This gene encodes human lysozyme, an enzyme that hydrolyzes the β(1-4) glycosidic linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine in bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan. Lysozyme is an antimicrobial agent found in human milk and present in spleen, lung, kidney, white blood cells, plasma, saliva, and tears. Missense mutations in LYZ have been associated with heritable renal amyloidosis.
