BRCA1 (Breast and Ovarian Cancer Susceptibility Protein 1)
BRCA1 is a nuclear phosphoprotein that maintains genomic stability and acts as a tumor suppressor. It interacts with DNA damage sensors and other proteins to form the BASC complex (BRCA1-associated genome surveillance complex). BRCA1 associates with RNA polymerase II and histone deacetylase complexes, playing roles in transcription, DNA repair, and recombination. Mutations in BRCA1 account for approximately 40% of inherited breast cancers and over 80% of inherited breast and ovarian cancers. Multiple alternatively spliced variants exist, some linked to disease-associated mutations.
