Target Information
BRCA1 (breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility protein 1) is a nuclear phosphoprotein that helps maintain genomic stability and acts as a tumor suppressor. It interacts with DNA damage sensors and signal transducers to form the BASC complex (BRCA1-associated genome surveillance complex). BRCA1 also associates with RNA polymerase II and histone deacetylase complexes, contributing to transcription regulation and DNA repair.
Mutations in BRCA1 are linked to approximately 40% of inherited breast cancers and over 80% of inherited breast and ovarian cancers. Alternative splicing affects its localization and function, with several disease-associated variants identified. A related pseudogene is located on chromosome 17.
