Target Information
The HOXC11 gene belongs to the homeobox family of genes. Homeobox genes encode a highly conserved family of transcription factors important for morphogenesis in multicellular organisms. Mammals possess four similar homeobox gene clusters (HOXA, HOXB, HOXC, HOXD) located on different chromosomes, each containing 9–11 genes arranged in tandem.
HOXC11 is part of the HOXC cluster on chromosome 12. The gene product binds to the promoter element of lactase-phlorizin hydrolase and may play a role in early intestinal development. An alternatively spliced variant encoding a shorter isoform has been described, but its full-length nature has not been determined.
