Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the subtilisin-like proprotein convertase family. Members of this family process latent precursor proteins into biologically active products.
PCSK1 encodes a type I proinsulin-processing enzyme crucial for insulin biosynthesis regulation. It also cleaves proopiomelanocortin, prorenin, proenkephalin, prodynorphin, prosomatostatin, and progastrin.
Mutations in this gene may cause obesity and are associated with carcinoid tumors. Alternate polyadenylation sites and multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.
