Target Information
CD1a is a non-polymorphic MHC Class I-related cell surface glycoprotein expressed in association with Beta 2 microglobulin. It is found on cortical thymocytes, Langerhans cells, and interdigitating cells, as well as in certain T-cell malignancies and histiocytosis X.
CD1a proteins mediate lipid and glycolipid antigen presentation to T cells and form heterodimers with beta-2-microglobulin. The CD1 gene family (CD1a–e) is located on chromosome 1 and exhibits distinct localization and ligand specificity. CD1a localizes to the plasma membrane and early endocytic vesicles. Alternative splicing variants have been observed but their biological significance remains unclear.
