Target Information
This gene encodes a G protein-coupled receptor with selectivity for three chemokines, termed IP10 (interferon-γ-inducible 10 kDa protein), Mig (monokine induced by interferon-γ), and I-TAC (interferon-inducible T cell α-chemoattractant).
These chemokines belong to the CXC structural subfamily, characterized by a single amino acid separating the first two of four conserved cysteine residues.
Binding of chemokines to CXCR3 induces cellular responses such as integrin activation, cytoskeletal rearrangement, and chemotactic migration.
The receptor couples to Gi-class G proteins and participates in rapid, transient signaling followed by receptor internalization and recycling.
CXCR3 is expressed in effector/memory T cells and in inflamed tissues, mediating recruitment of inflammatory cells.
It is a potential target for small molecule antagonists aimed at treating inflammatory diseases.
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
