Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. The MRPS18B gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S18P family, one of three human mitochondrial S18 proteins with similarity to bacterial S18 proteins. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are located on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
