Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, hindering recognition by sequence homology. The 28S subunit may play a key role in translation initiation. The MRPS31 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein and has been associated with type 1 diabetes, though its role in disease etiology remains unclear. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 3 and 13.
