Target Information

Leptin is a 167-amino acid protein hormone that regulates body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. It has a molecular mass of approximately 16 kDa and is encoded by the ob (obese) gene. Leptin is primarily secreted by adipocytes, reflecting total body fat mass, and is also produced in smaller amounts by stomach epithelial cells and the placenta.

Leptin receptors are highly expressed in the hypothalamus, T lymphocytes, and vascular endothelial cells. Through these receptors, leptin influences feeding behavior, energy expenditure, thermogenesis, and body temperature regulation. It also plays roles in hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune responses, pubertal development, and fetal growth.

Leptin has been studied in the context of obesity, anorexia nervosa, insulin resistance, and hypertension. Mutations affecting leptin production can cause severe hereditary obesity in both rodents and humans.
