Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, contrasting with prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA component. The MRPS12 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S12P family, which is crucial for decoding fidelity and aminoglycoside antibiotic susceptibility. This gene is located adjacent to the mitochondrial seryl-tRNA synthetase gene and may be associated with autosomal dominant deafness (DFNA4). Multiple splice variants exist but encode the same protein.
