Target Information
Fibroblast Growth Factor 4 (FGF4) is a member of the FGF family with broad mitogenic and cell survival activities. It plays essential roles in stem cell growth and survival during embryogenesis, tissue regeneration, and carcinogenesis. FGF4 has strong oncogenic and angiogenic properties, being expressed in various vascularized tumors and adult mouse tissues such as testis, intestine, and brain.
Mouse studies indicate its involvement in bone morphogenesis and limb development via the Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway. FGF4 also regulates neural progenitor proliferation and neuronal differentiation. Recent findings highlight its role in promoting human embryonic stem cell growth and suggest a feedback inhibition mechanism by an FGF4 splice isoform that may facilitate differentiation in later developmental stages.
