Target Information
ERK1 and ERK2 are widely expressed and play key roles in the regulation of meiosis, mitosis, and postmitotic functions in differentiated cells. These kinases are activated by various stimuli including growth factors, cytokines, viral infections, and G protein-coupled receptor ligands. Upon activation, Ras interacts with Raf, which phosphorylates MEK1/2, subsequently activating ERK1/2 through tyrosine/threonine phosphorylation. Activated ERKs phosphorylate cytoplasmic targets or translocate to the nucleus to activate transcription factors such as c-Fos and Elk-1.
