FTH1은 ferritin의 heavy subunit으로, 원핵 및 진핵세포에서 주요 세포내 철 저장 단백질입니다. 24개의 heavy 및 light chain 서브유닛으로 구성되어 있으며, ferritin 서브유닛 조성의 변이는 조직별 철의 흡수 및 방출 속도에 영향을 줄 수 있습니다. 주요 기능은 철을 용해성이고 무독성 상태로 저장하는 것입니다. Ferritin 단백질의 결함은 여러 신경퇴행성 질환과 관련이 있습니다. 이 유전자는 다수의 유사유전자를 가지며, 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이가 보고되었으나 생물학적 유효성은 확인되지 않았습니다.
