Target Information
The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure. The core structure consists of four rings of 28 non-identical subunits; two rings are composed of seven alpha subunits and two rings are composed of seven beta subunits. Proteasomes are widely distributed in eukaryotic cells and play a key role in ATP/ubiquitin-dependent peptide cleavage through a non-lysosomal pathway. The immunoproteasome variant is essential for class I MHC peptide processing. The PSMA6 gene encodes a 20S core alpha subunit belonging to the peptidase T1A family. A pseudogene has been identified on the Y chromosome.
