Target Information
Chromosome 20 represents about 2% of human DNA, consisting of approximately 63 million bases and 600 genes. It contains a region with numerous genes expressed in the epididymis, which are important for seminal production and considered potential targets for male contraception. The PRNP gene, encoding the prion protein associated with spongiform encephalopathies such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, is also located on chromosome 20. Additionally, chromosome 20 is associated with disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, ring chromosome 20 epilepsy syndrome, and Alagille syndrome.
