Target Information
The p35 protein is a neuron-specific activator of cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5), essential for proper central nervous system development. p35 is cleaved by calpain to form p25, which relocates from the cell periphery to nuclear and perinuclear regions. The accumulation of p25 in neurons of Alzheimer’s disease patients correlates with increased CDK5 activity and aberrant phosphorylation of tau protein, contributing to disease pathology.
