Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The MRPS12 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein of the ribosomal protein S12P family, crucial for decoding fidelity and aminoglycoside antibiotic susceptibility. It is located near the mitochondrial seryl-tRNA synthetase gene, both considered candidates for autosomal dominant deafness (DFNA4). Splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR encode the same protein.
