Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins composing mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence-based recognition difficult. The MRPL21 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and multiple transcript variants have been identified, some potentially subject to nonsense-mediated decay (NMD).
