Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
The MRPL18 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the L18P ribosomal protein family. Three polymorphic sites exist in this gene, including one that adds an extra amino acid near the N-terminus.
