Target Information
The WNT gene family encodes secreted signaling proteins involved in oncogenesis and developmental processes such as cell fate regulation and embryonic patterning.
WNT4 is the first signaling molecule shown to influence the sex-determination cascade. It encodes a protein sharing 98% amino acid identity with mouse and rat Wnt4.
WNT4, together with a nuclear receptor that antagonizes testis-determining factors, regulates female development and prevents testes formation.
Additionally, WNT4, WNT2, and WNT7B may be associated with abnormal proliferation in breast tissue.
Mutations in WNT4 can lead to Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome and SERKAL syndrome.
