Target Information
Calpain proteinases are papain-like neutral proteases activated by calcium. Calpains 1 and 2 consist of a large catalytic subunit and a small non-catalytic subunit (calpain-4). Other calpains (5–15) do not require a small subunit.
Calpain-7 domain-N lacks the EF-hand calcium-binding domain, suggesting uncertain calcium regulation. Instead, it contains a domain similar to domain-III, with unknown function. Calpain-7 is widely distributed across tissues.
