Target Information
Fatty acid binding proteins (FABP) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with high tissue specificity. FABPs bind long-chain fatty acids and play a key role in intracellular fatty acid utilization. There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing specific tissue expression patterns.
FABP leaks rapidly from damaged or dying cells, leading to elevated serum levels. Liver FABP serves as a sensitive marker for hepatocellular damage both in vitro and in vivo. Damaged tissues typically show reduced FABP presence, aiding histological identification. L-FABP is also used as a marker for rapid hepatocyte lysis in toxicology assays and for detecting liver damage during and after transplantation.
