Target Information
Leukocytes adhere to the blood vessel endothelium during extravasation in postcapillary venules of lymph nodes. Leukocyte adhesion also occurs in capillaries and small venules throughout the body following inflammation onset. This immediate response involves a cascade of adhesion receptors, including members of the selectin and immunoglobulin superfamilies at the endothelial surface.
E-selectin (CD62E) is an endothelial cell-specific C-type lectin expressed only after activation by proinflammatory cytokines. In vitro studies show that IL-1, TNFα, and bacterial components such as lipopolysaccharides induce E-selectin transcription via an NFκB-dependent signaling cascade. E-selectin is associated with blood vessel endothelium in various inflammatory contexts.
