Target Information
Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) is a steroid-binding plasma protein secreted by the liver. It regulates steroid responses by transporting androgens and estrogens in the blood as dimers of identical monomers. Low plasma SHBG levels are associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and risk of type 2 diabetes. Genetic polymorphisms in SHBG have been linked to polycystic ovary syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
