Target Information
Gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) regulates various functions of the gastrointestinal and central nervous systems, including:
- Release of gastrointestinal hormones
- Smooth muscle cell contraction
- Epithelial cell proliferation
GRP acts as a potent mitogen for neoplastic tissues. Its effects are mediated through the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR), a glycosylated 7-transmembrane G-protein coupled receptor that activates the phospholipase C signaling pathway. GRPR is aberrantly expressed in various cancers including lung, colon, and prostate. A balanced translocation involving chromosome 8 and chromosome X within the GRPR gene has been identified in an individual with autism and multiple exostoses.
