CAPS2와 관련된 CAPS1 단백질은 신경 및 내분비 특이적 세포질 및 주변막 단백질을 암호화합니다. 두 단백질 모두 시냅스 소포 프라이밍 기구의 필수 구성 요소로, Ca²⁺-조절 분비 소포의 외포작용에 필요합니다. CAPS 결핍 뉴런은 융합 가능한 시냅스 소포가 거의 없어 빠른 신경전달물질 방출이 저하됩니다. CAPS2는 다양한 아이소폼을 가지며, 뇌의 특정 영역에서 서로 다른 발현 패턴을 보입니다. 예를 들어, CAPS2b는 발달 중인 소뇌에서 높은 발현을 보입니다. 또한 일부 자폐 환자에서 엑손 3이 결실된 CAPS2 mRNA가 검출되어, CAPS2의 발현 조절이 신경 발달에 관여함을 시사합니다.
