ALDH1A1는 알데하이드 탈수소효소 계열의 단백질로, 알코올 대사의 주요 산화 경로 중 두 번째 효소입니다. 이 효소는 세포질형과 미토콘드리아형의 두 주요 간 이소형으로 구분되며, 전기영동 이동성, 반응 속도, 세포내 위치에서 차이를 보입니다. 대부분의 백인은 두 가지 주요 이소효소를 모두 가지지만, 약 50%의 동양인은 미토콘드리아형 이소효소가 결여되어 있습니다. 이는 동양인에서 급성 알코올 중독 발생 빈도가 높은 이유 중 하나로 제안됩니다.
