Gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP)는 위장관 및 중추신경계에서 다양한 기능을 조절하며, 위장관 호르몬 분비, 평활근 수축, 상피세포 증식에 관여합니다. GRP는 강력한 종양 촉진 인자로 작용하며, 그 효과는 gastrin-releasing peptide receptor(GRPR)에 의해 매개됩니다.
GRPR은 당화된 7-막관통 G-단백질 결합 수용체로, phospholipase C 신호 전달 경로를 활성화합니다. 이 수용체는 폐, 대장, 전립선 등 다양한 암 조직에서 비정상적으로 발현됩니다.
또한, 자폐증 및 다발성 외골증을 가진 개인에서 8번 염색체와 X 염색체 사이의 균형 전좌가 GRPR 유전자 내 절단점에 위치한 사례가 보고되었습니다.
