Target Information

Heterotrimeric G proteins relay information from cell surface receptors to intracellular effectors. Each receptor detects specific extracellular stimuli such as photons, pheromones, odorants, hormones, or neurotransmitters, while effectors like adenyl cyclase generate intracellular messengers. In mammals, G protein α, β, and γ subunits are encoded by at least 16, 4, and 7 genes, respectively. Although α subunits are well studied for their GTP-binding and hydrolysis functions, βγ subunits also play crucial regulatory roles. Distinct combinations of α, β, and γ subunits in different tissues contribute to G protein functional diversity.
