Target Information
The sarcoglycan transmembrane proteins are members of the dystrophin complex. Sarcoglycans cluster together to form a complex localized in the cell membrane of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle fibers. Four sarcoglycan subunits — alpha, beta, gamma, and delta — form a complex on the skeletal muscle cell surface. Genetic defects in any of these proteins cause the loss or reduction of the entire sarcoglycan complex, leading to autosomal recessive muscular dystrophy (sarcoglycanopathy).
In smooth muscle, beta- and delta-sarcoglycans associate with epsilon-sarcoglycan, a glycoprotein homologous to alpha-sarcoglycan. A complete deficiency in delta-sarcoglycan is known to cause the Syrian hamster BIO.14 cardiomyopathy.
