Target Information
Leukocytes adhere to the blood vessel endothelium during extravasation in postcapillary venules of lymph nodes. Leukocyte adhesion also occurs in capillaries and small venules throughout the body after inflammation onset. This immediate response involves a cascade of adhesion receptors, including selectins and immunoglobulin superfamily members on the endothelial surface.
E-selectin (CD62E) is an endothelial cell-specific selectin expressed only after activation with proinflammatory cytokines. In vitro studies show that IL-1, TNFα, and bacterial components such as lipopolysaccharides induce E-selectin transcription through an NFκB-dependent signaling cascade. E-selectin is associated with blood vessel endothelium in various inflammatory conditions.
