NAGS는 글루탐산과 아세틸 코엔자임 A로부터 N-acetylglutamate (NAG)를 형성하는 미토콘드리아 효소입니다.
NAG는 포유류의 요소 회로 첫 번째 효소인 carbamyl phosphate synthetase I (CPSI)의 보조인자로 작용합니다.
N-acetylglutamate synthase 결핍은 고암모니아혈증(hyperammonemia)과 관련이 있습니다.
이 유전자는 NAG의 가용성을 변화시켜 CPSI 활성 및 요소생성(ureagenesis)을 조절할 수 있습니다.
