DEAD box proteins, characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), are putative RNA helicases involved in multiple cellular processes related to RNA secondary structure modification, such as translation initiation, splicing, and ribosome assembly.
This gene encodes a DEAD box protein functioning as an ATPase activated by various RNA species. The DDX17 protein is closely related to DDX5 and can produce multiple isoforms via alternative splicing and translation initiation, including a non-AUG (CUG) start codon.
