Target Information
The PLUNC family of proteins are encoded by genes located on chromosome 20 and are believed to play a role in the innate immune response in the mouth, nose, and lungs. As a member of this family, BASE (breast cancer and salivary gland-expressed protein) is a 179-amino-acid secreted protein named for its expression pattern. Due to its 63% sequence similarity with the related protein Latherin, BASE is suggested to be a major component in sweat secretions with surfactant properties that lower surface tension. The expression of BASE in many breast cancer cell lines indicates its potential as a diagnostic marker. The gene encoding BASE is highly estrogen-repressed, suggesting expression is dependent on HNF-3α and estrogen-mediated repression via ERα.
