Target Information
NDUFS5 (NADH dehydrogenase [ubiquinone] iron-sulfur protein 5) is a subunit of mitochondrial complex I, located in the mitochondrial inner membrane. Complex I is the first and largest enzyme in the electron transport chain of oxidative phosphorylation. It oxidizes NADH produced in the Krebs cycle, transferring electrons to ubiquinone and ultimately contributing to oxygen reduction to water.
NDUFS5 is a 106-amino acid protein that is not directly involved in catalysis but is expressed ubiquitously in human tissues, with higher expression levels in heart, skeletal muscle, liver, kidney, and fetal heart.
Defects in complex I subunits can lead to various myopathies and neuropathies, making this target clinically significant.
