Target Information
In response to environmental stress, many cells increase expression of heat shock or stress proteins. HSPB1 (Heat Shock Protein Beta-1, also known as HSP27) acts as a molecular chaperone maintaining denatured proteins in a folding-competent state. It contributes to stress resistance and actin organization, and regulates biological processes such as phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins. Mutations in HSPB1 can lead to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy type 2B.
