S100B는 2개의 EF-hand calcium-binding motif를 포함하는 S100 단백질 패밀리의 구성원입니다. 이 단백질들은 세포질 및/또는 핵에 존재하며, 세포 주기 진행 및 분화 등의 다양한 세포 과정 조절에 관여합니다.
S100B는 신경돌기 연장, 흑색종 세포 증식, Ca²⁺ 유입 자극, PKC 매개 인산화 억제, 성상세포증 및 축삭 증식, 미세소관 조립 억제 등의 기능을 수행할 수 있습니다.
이 유전자의 염색체 재배열 및 발현 이상은 Alzheimer’s disease, Down’s syndrome, epilepsy, ALS, melanoma, type I diabetes 등 여러 질환과 관련이 있습니다.
