Product Specific Information
The antibody was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity chromatography using epitope-specific immunogen. The purity is greater than 95% as determined by SDS-PAGE.
Target Information
Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class forms the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens central fiber cells lose nuclei during development, so crystallins are synthesized and retained throughout life, making them extremely stable.
Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma crystallins are also considered a superfamily. Alpha and beta families are further divided into acidic and basic groups.
Gamma-crystallins are homogeneous, highly symmetrical, monomeric proteins typically lacking connecting peptides and terminal extensions, and are differentially regulated after early development.
This gene encodes a protein originally considered a beta-crystallin but actually a monomeric gamma-crystallin with high sequence similarity to other gamma-crystallins. It is the most significant gamma-crystallin in adult eye lens tissue. Aging or gene mutations in gamma-crystallins are associated with cataract formation.
