Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as an inactive 31 kDa pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into an active 17 kDa form through inflammasome activation and caspase-1 processing. IL-1 beta lacks a classical secretion signal and is released via a noncanonical pathway. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors and is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). Elevated IL-1 beta levels are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, and IL-1 beta neutralizing antibodies have potential therapeutic value.
