Target Information

ATP6V1C1 is a component of vacuolar ATPase (V-ATPase), a multisubunit enzyme that mediates acidification of intracellular compartments in eukaryotic cells.
V-ATPase–dependent acidification is essential for processes such as:

  • Protein sorting
  • Zymogen activation
  • Receptor-mediated endocytosis
  • Synaptic vesicle proton gradient generation

V-ATPase consists of:

  • V1 domain: three A and three B subunits, two G subunits, and the C, D, E, F, and H subunits (contains ATP catalytic site)
  • V0 domain: subunits a, c, c’, c’’, and d

This gene encodes one of two V1 domain C subunit proteins and is ubiquitously expressed. The C subunit is analogous but not homologous to the gamma subunit of F-ATPases. Previously designated as ATP6D.
