Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes and are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
ABCE1 is a member of the OABP subfamily and functions as an RNase L inhibitor, blocking ribonuclease L activity. Activation of RNase L inhibits protein synthesis in the 2-5A/RNase L system, a central pathway in viral interferon action. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
