Target Information
Adipose tissue functions as a tightly regulated energy reserve in animals. Adipocytes produce and secrete several key proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin, also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor (ADSF) or FIZZ3, is a cytokine secreted specifically by adipocytes. Although its precise function remains unclear, resistin appears to play paracrine roles and is implicated in type 2 diabetes. Elevated serum resistin levels in obese, diabetic mice antagonize insulin action, leading to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance.
Resistin gene expression depends on C/EBP alpha and is regulated by coactivators CBP and p300, which acetylate histones at the resistin promoter to activate transcription. PPAR gamma and RXR ligands have been shown to downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
