AANAT의 발현량 변화는 송과선과 망막에서 멜라토닌 합성의 주야 리듬을 조절하는 주요 요인으로 알려져 있습니다. 최근 연구에서는 AANAT 단백질의 양이나 활성 변화 없이도 멜라토닌 생산을 조절하는 새로운 메커니즘이 존재할 가능성이 제시되고 있습니다. 이러한 조절은 인간에서 어두운 시기가 시작될 때 순환 멜라토닌 농도가 급격히 증가하는 현상을 설명할 수 있습니다.
