Target Information
This gene encodes a protein that interacts with the N-terminal region of BRCA1. It shares homology with the conserved regions of BRCA1, including the N-terminal RING motif and C-terminal BRCT domain. The RING motif is a cysteine-rich sequence found in proteins regulating cell growth, such as tumor suppressors and protooncogenes. BARD1 also contains three tandem ankyrin repeats.
The BARD1/BRCA1 interaction can be disrupted by tumorigenic amino acid substitutions in BRCA1, suggesting their complex formation is essential for BRCA1 tumor suppression. This protein may be a target of oncogenic mutations in breast or ovarian cancer.
