ECT (ethanolaminephosphate cytidyltransferase) is a key regulatory enzyme in the phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) biosynthesis pathway.
PE plays roles in:

• Cell signalling
• Membrane fusion
• Platelet activation
• Cell cycle progression

Specialized forms of PE exist as plasmologens, natural cannabinoid anadimade, and glycosylated PE.
ECT acts in the second of three catalytic steps to produce CDP-ethanolamine from phosphoethanolamine (P-Etn).
Research on ECT aids in understanding plasmologen functions in lipid disorders, peroxisomal diseases, and neuronal degeneration such as Alzheimer’s disease.
