Target Information
CHRNA3 locus encodes a member of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor family of proteins. These proteins form pentameric complexes composed of both alpha and beta subunits. The CHRNA3 gene encodes an alpha-type subunit containing characteristic adjacent cysteine residues. The encoded protein functions as a ligand-gated ion channel involved in neurotransmission.
Polymorphisms in this gene have been linked to increased risk of smoking initiation and susceptibility to lung cancer. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.
