Target Information
The PKLR gene encodes a pyruvate kinase that catalyzes the transphosphorylation of phosphoenolpyruvate into pyruvate and ATP, a rate-limiting step in glycolysis.
Defects in this enzyme, caused by mutations or genetic variations, are associated with chronic hereditary nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia (CNSHA/HNSHA).
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
